As Florida International University enters year two under head coach Butch Davis, the Panthers are primed to have another solid, bowl-eligible season.
Two players that will be in the forefront of any success that FIU has this season received recognition for talent recently.
Senior defensive lineman Fermin Silva and senior offensive lineman Jordan Budwig were named to the Conference USA Coaches’ Preseason Team the league announced Monday.
Silva, a Miami Central alum, led FIU’s defense in tackles for loss (14), sacks (7) and quarterback hurries (6) while also registering 50 tackles this past season – earning All-CUSA Second Team honors.
The tenacious and versatile Silva has seen his production jump in each of first three seasons and has settled into his role as one of the team’s overall leaders.
The 6-foot-4, 310-pound Budwig anchored the Panthers’ offensive line this past season. After missing the previous two seasons with injuries, “Budwig Bear” helped FIU rack up 2,069 rushing yards this past season as he also earned a spot on the All-CUSA Second Team.
