If an offensive lineman does his job correctly, he goes unnoticed.
But when an offensive lineman does his job correctly, a lot, he gets some recognition.
University of Miami senior center Tyler Gauthier was named to the 2018 Spring Watch List for the Rimington Trophy, presented annually to the most outstanding center in NCAA Division I football, it was announced Wednesday by the Boomer Esiason Foundation.
Gauthier started all 13 games in the middle of the Hurricanes’ offensive line this past season – extending his personal streak to 17 consecutive games – and earned Honorable Mention All-ACC honors in 2017.
The 6-foot-5, 315-pound Venice, Florida native was arguably UM’s most consistent offensive lineman a year ago. While the line as a whole was a bit maligned, Gauthier more than did his part to help pave the way for 2,090 rushing yards (160.8 yards per game) and 3,153 passing yards (242.5 yards per game).
If Gauthier, who received praise from coaches this past spring for his continued strong play up front, wins the award in 2018 he would join Brett Romberg (2002) as the only Rimington Trophy winners in Miami Hurricanes history.
