UM’s Dewan Huell Declares For Draft, Won’t Sign With Agent

Another University of Miami basketball player has decided to test the NBA Draft waters.

Sophomore and Miami native Dewan Huell announced via social media that he will declare for June’s NBA Draft but said that he will not sign with an agent as to retain his college eligibility.

College players have until April 22 to enter their name into the draft pool and must withdraw from the draft by June 11 if they intend to return to school.

Huell – and fellow Canes sophomore Bruce Brown Jr. – will try to prove themselves to pro scouts at the NBA’s pre-draft combine (May 16-20) or use the pre-draft experience as a litmus test to see where they can improve when they return to school.

Miami freshman Lonnie Walker IV, a player that is projected to go within the first half of the first round of the NBA Draft, has yet to announce his decision; but it is widely believed he will declare and will sign with an agent – unlike Huell and Brown.

A 6-foot-11, 236-pound former McDonald’s All-American out of Miami Norland High School, Huell averaged 11.4 points and 6.6 rebounds per game this season. He was the only Hurricanes player to start all 32 games this past season and scored in double figures in 20 of those games – with three 20-plus point efforts.

Huell is a skilled big man with the length that fits the mold for today’s NBA game. However, he’s not a defensive stalwart by any stretch and could use more time in the collegiate ranks to add a bit more bulk and refine his shot blocking and rebounding.

Though he ranked 14th in the ACC in rebounding, Huell would benefit from another solid season leading the Hurricanes – who finished the 2017-18 season 22-10 after losing to eventual Final Four semifinalist Loyola-Chicago.
